What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a foundational practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that works with the body’s natural energy system, known as Qi (pronounced "chee"), to support physical, emotional, and energetic healing. Qi is a vital life force that flows through specific pathways, or meridians, in the body. When Qi is balanced and flows freely, the body is better able to maintain health and vitality. When blocked or stagnant, discomfort and illness can arise.

With origins tracing back more than 3,000 years, acupuncture therapy is one of the world’s oldest and most respected healing systems. It is widely used today to treat pain, reduce stress, regulate the nervous system, and improve overall well-being.

During an acupuncture treatment, ultra-thin, sterile, single-use needles are gently inserted into precise acupuncture points along the body. These points are chosen to rebalance Qi and stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Patients often find acupuncture deeply relaxing—many even fall asleep during sessions. The healing continues well after the needles are removed, as the body integrates the energetic shift.

In addition to acupuncture needling, Dr. Smith may also offer HypnoPuncture—a unique and transformative blend of acupuncture and clinical hypnotherapy. This integrative approach works on both the energetic and subconscious levels to help release emotional blocks, calm the nervous system, and accelerate healing. By combining the energetic flow of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the deep mental relaxation of hypnosis, HypnoPuncture enhances the mind-body connection and promotes lasting change from the inside out.

Some common ailments that can benefit from Acupuncture are:

Dr. Cynthia first began studying acupuncture while a student at Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, MO.  She began providing acupuncture after completing her certification in 1997 in Colorado. Upon moving to California Dr. Cynthia attended Southern California University of Health Sciences and earned her Master's in Acupuncture.

Chiropractic Care

Dr. Cynthia Smith retired from chiropractic care in 2023 after a series of injuries made it impossible for her to continue providing physical medicine as she had for 30 years. Nevertheless, she still applies her extensive knowledge in neurology, orthopedics, and other body sciences while offering acupuncture, hypnotherapy, coaching, and clairvoyant readings.

Although she can no longer provide the adjustments and therapies she once did, she strongly encourages everyone to seek regular chiropractic care to maintain their spine and nervous system in optimal condition. Dr. Cynthia firmly believes in the power, the science and art of chiropractic.

Acupuncture FAQs

Patients of Intuitive Hypnotherapy often turn to acupuncture for relief from pain, stress, and other health concerns. If you are considering acupuncture, it is natural to have questions about how it works, what to expect, and whether it is safe. This guide addresses common questions to help you make informed decisions about your care and feel more comfortable before your first session.

Is Acupuncture Painful?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during acupuncture. The needles are extremely thin, and practitioners are trained to insert them gently. Some people experience a slight tingling or pressure sensation at the insertion site, but it is generally well tolerated.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your condition and response to treatment. Some patients notice improvement after the first visit, while others benefit from multiple sessions over several weeks. Our hypnotherapist will create a plan tailored to your individual needs.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a licensed professional. Minor side effects can include slight bruising, tenderness, or fatigue after treatment. Serious complications are rare, especially when sterile needles and proper techniques are used.

Can Acupuncture Help with Stress and Anxiety?

Many patients find acupuncture effective for reducing stress and anxiety. The therapy promotes relaxation, improves circulation, and may influence hormones related to stress. It is often used alongside other methods, such as counseling or lifestyle changes, for a holistic approach.

How Do I Prepare for a Session?

Wear comfortable clothing and eat a light meal before your session. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, and arrive with an open mind. Communicating your concerns and health history with our hypnotherapist helps ensure a safe and effective experience.
